Already Applied? — What To Expect & When
Already Applied? — What To Expect & When
Once your ITIN application has been filed with the IRS, things go quiet for a little while — and that’s completely normal. In most cases, the IRS will not send any updates or correspondence for the first 8 to 12 weeks. During this period, no action is required from you.
If the IRS needs anything additional, they will send a letter to the address on your application. The most common letter is a CP566, which usually means they need further documentation or clarification. In some cases, you might receive a CP567, which indicates the application was rejected. And of course, if all goes well, the IRS will send a CP565 — your official ITIN confirmation letter.
If you receive any letter at all from the IRS, please don’t worry. Simply email us a clear scan or photo of it, and we’ll explain exactly what it means and how we’ll respond. If the IRS has requested more information or rejected the application, we’ll prepare a free refile as part of our Refile Guarantee. We’ll take care of all the paperwork again at no additional cost to you.
Now, if 12 weeks have passed since we submitted your application and you haven’t received anything in the mail, it’s a good idea to reach out. Sometimes letters go missing, or the IRS processing time stretches slightly beyond the usual window. We’re happy to help you follow up and, if necessary, contact the IRS on your behalf to check the status of your application.
You’re not alone in this — and we’re here every step of the way.
